The Southern University Office of Student Media Services and the Student Publications Board has named Terry Jones as editor in chief of The Southern Digest student newspaper, Anthony Moore as editor in chief of the Jaguar Yearbook and Amber Perry as editor in chief of the Ego Magazine, for the 2006-2007 academic year.
Jones, who is currently interning with the Shreveport Times newspaper was a member of the 2006 New York Times Journalism Institute last month. The 29-year old Baton Rouge native entered Southern in 1996 but withdrew from school due to family emergency. He returned to SU in 2004.
“My career with the Digest has been a very unexpected turn of events,” he said about the twice weekly, 8,000 copy per run publication. “I never thought I would one day be editor in chief after first walking in the door and receiving my first story.”
Jones said one of his main goals, as editor in chief next semester will be to ensure that the publication is a true reflection of the university’s student body. He also wants to work closely with the mass communication department in hopes of reaching out to his fellow classmates to show them the benefits of being apart of the Digest staff.
Anthony Moore, editor in chief of the Jaguar Yearbook 2006-07.
“Being a student journalist has afforded me the many opportunities I will need to further my career as a journalist upon graduation,” Jones said. “I just want to make sure my fellow classmates know the opportunities they are passing up by not taking full advantage of what we have to offer them here at Southern.”
Moore returns to the yearbook staff after missing the fall 2005 semester as a reservist who aided in the military support of his hometown New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. The engineering major came back in the spring semester to serve as the layout editor.
“I realized how great of a place Southern is after having to leave school for a while,” said Moore. “I want to show this in the upcoming yearbook and show the things that most students take for granted at Southern.”
The Jaguar yearbook is released every October and is 320 pages in complete color.
Amber Rose Perry, new editor in chief of the Ego Magazine at Southern University for 2006-07.
Perry is the first editor of the newly created Ego Magazine. The Ego is the official student magazine at Southern University and will publish its first issue this September.
“I want this to be an arm of the student body and what we are at SU,” said Perry, a 21-year-old Independence native. Perry said that the magazine would be more of a sign-of-the-time and artistic version of what the student body is about.
The magazine will print 48 to 56 pages completely in full color. The publication will publish five times per academic year with a special summer edition, which will feature an art and literary review of works by SU students and faculty members.
