BATON ROUGE, La. - Southern University conducted its summer commencement exercises Friday, in the F. G. Clark Activity Center, graduating 270 students who completed graduate and undergraduate coursework during the summer semester.



The university also graduated its first Ph.D, student in environmental toxicology. Sridevi Yadavilli enrolled in the program in fall of 2001 when the program commenced and completed her dissertation on "Cellular and molecular mechanisms mediating 1,3-butadience induced cytotoxicity in human lymphoblast."

Degrees were presented by the vice chancellor for academic affairs, Dr. Johnny Tolliver, and conferred by current chancellor and interim systems president, Dr. Edward R. Jackson.



Albanye Miranda Randall of Plaquemine was named Chief Student Marshal, as the student with the highest cumulative grade point average of the entire graduating class. Randall, graduating with 3.8 grade point average received a Bachelor of Science degree.

Jackson also recognized the 22 students in attendance from the Universidad del Valle de Orizaba of Orizaba, Vera Cruz (Mexico). Among the group are 10 business students who are visiting Southern this summer, as part of a program designed to introduce and focus on international business practices in the state of Louisiana.



The other 12 students came to study English and to learn more about Louisiana's cultural diversity.



Southern University holds a fall, spring and summer graduation commencement with the fall averaging over 500 graduates and the spring with over 600.
